What is an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy Externship?
The Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy® (EFCT) Externship is an immersive, four-day (24+ hour) training designed to give therapists a science-based, experiential understanding of how to create lasting relational change.
Guided by Certified EFT Trainer Dr. Rebecca Jorgensen, the externship offers a clear introduction to the EFCT model grounded in attachment science and the systematic, evidence-supported approach created by Dr. Sue Johnson. You’ll learn how EFT provides a reliable path for helping couples repair disconnection, deepen emotional engagement, and form secure bonds.
The training follows the EFCT model outlined in Attachment Theory in Practice and demonstrates how this approach is applied session-by-session in clinical work.
Participants will:
Understand the foundational experiential and systemic concepts of the Emotionally Focused approach.
Learn to view clients through the lens of attachment patterns, helping you conceptualize distress, repair ruptures, and create safety.
Build skills in forming an engaged, open, and collaborative therapeutic alliance.
Gain hands-on experience with the EFT Tango, the core macro-intervention guiding meaningful emotional shifts.
Strengthen competency in EFT micro-interventions from experiential and attachment-based models.
Learn how to navigate common blocks and impasses to help clients access corrective emotional experiences that lead to lasting healing.
Who Is This Training For?
This externship is ideal for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, marriage & family therapists, and other licensed mental health professionals who want to deliver effective, trustworthy therapy that creates visible and lasting change.
No prerequisites are required, though participants are encouraged to review key EFT readings for the richest experience.
Therapists often describe this training as transformational not only for their clients, but for their own growth, confidence, and sense of direction as clinicians. Joining an externship also connects you to a global EFT community dedicated to attachment-based healing, shared learning, and collaborative support.
