Healing the Past: Group Therapy for Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA)
Growing up in a home impacted by alcohol or substance misuse can shape the way you see yourself, relate to others, and navigate the world long after childhood ends. At Carolina Therapy Solutions, we understand that these experiences often leave lasting emotional imprints, ones that may show up as difficulty trusting others, chronic self-doubt, emotional overwhelm, or feeling disconnected from your own needs. Healing the Past is a therapy group, led by Dr. Stevens, designed specifically for adults who were raised by caregivers with alcohol or substance use concerns and who are ready to better understand themselves, their patterns, and their paths forward.
This Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) group therapy offering provides a supportive, structured, and compassionate space to explore how early family dynamics continue to influence emotional regulation, self-worth, boundaries, and relationships. You do not need to have all the answers or even the words for your experience to benefit from this group. Curiosity, openness, and a willingness to reflect are enough.
Who This Group Is For
This group may be a good fit if you:
Grew up in a household where alcohol or other substances were heavily used by a parent or primary caregiver
Experienced emotional unpredictability, inconsistency, neglect, or abuse in childhood
Struggle with trust, vulnerability, or closeness in relationships
Tend to suppress emotions or feel overwhelmed by them
Experience low self-esteem, chronic guilt, shame, or self-blame
Notice patterns of people-pleasing, hypervigilance, or difficulty setting boundaries
Many adults with these experiences identify with the term Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA). While everyone’s story is different, there are common emotional and relational themes that often emerge and there is deep healing that can occur when these patterns are explored in community.
